Jefferson Berry Premieres New Song “Shattered Glass” From Upcoming New LP, Double Deadbolt Logic
Jefferson Berry releases new track, “Shattered Glass,” from his forthcoming album, Double Deadbolt Logic.
“A lot of what I know about stealing cars is from my students. Teaching inner-city high school Social Science, we get into crime stats. They love talking about crime. But several times a term I’m informed that “you won’t be seeing so and so for a while. He got picked up.” Frequently, these guys are among my best, most literate students. Shattered Glass is a reflection (pun intended) of two types of crimes in Philadelphia: thefts from cars and grand theft auto. Combined, these “reported” crimes occur over 50 times a day in Philly. That’s 18,000 times a year. My guys tell me that the older Hondas and Toyotas are the best to grab for a couple of reasons. The older cars don’t have the fancy ignition systems in them and you can hot-wire them quick by busting open the steering column. And there’s a market for their parts, so you can get them off the street to a chop shop fast, get your money and go. A lot of the time though, my guys are just wanting a ride to cruise in.
Now there’s also a racket they talk about where you boost a late model Mercedes, get into a shipping container for South America. But that’s just talk. Here in Philly, poor people steal cars for
parts or steal stuff left in cars.” — Jefferson Berry
