West Philadelphia’s Mikie Mayo talks Long Distance Friendship In His New Track, “I Miss When Emo Songs Had Really Long Titles”

Autotune is a technology that has been used in music since 1997.  Much of the time when you think of autotune you think of artists such as TPain singing hooks to popular rap tracks. If you are a fan of autotune, but want something new and refreshing, Mikie Mayo may be the artist for you.

Mayo is applying 100 Gecs style songwriting mixed with his autotuned verses in his new song, “I Miss When Emo Songs Had Really Long Titles.” Partnering with Pittsburgh producer, Dream Rats ( @dream.rats on IG), Mayo has crafted an uptempo and socially relevant song with contagious melodies. The song is short enough that you will want to listen multiple times to  understand the meaning of this song, what does this song mean? To my ears it’s about quarantine and long distant friendships. The lines “Friendships states away , hold the keys…something always holding us back” speaks of Mayo’s longing to reconnect with other friends and move forward to socializing, but current events have not allowed Mayo or other musicians to continue with the lifestyle of touring or reconnecting with others in physical spaces.

Emo culture is very popular in Philadelphia, as we have a large emo and punk basement music scene.. Mayo connects the idea of being in a basement show with his pop sensibilities in this track. The dolphin sample splits the lyrical transitions throughout the song as Mayo makes different points between verses.
