Orion Sun – “mama’s baby” & “Coffee For Dinner”

It’s been a busy year for Orion Sun. The Philadelphia singer-songwriter has released their debut full-length album, Hold Space For Me, along with a loose-ends album titled A Collection Of Fleeting Moments And Daydreams. And earlier this week, in the midst of protests of national unrest, she released “mama’s baby” on Soundcloud, which helped raise over 18 thousand dollars for Breonna Taylor’s family and the Loveland Foundation. Check it out below along with “Coffee For Dinner,” a single from Hold Space For Me.

MH The Verb – “Broken Wings”

Earlier this year Philadelphia MC MH The Verb released his collab-heavy new album, Space Ninja, which features many Philly area favorites such as Kuf Knotz, Christine Elise, & Chena Kovax. On “Broken Wings,” MH is backed up by none other than experimental jam duo Trap Rabbit (Logan Roth & Arjun Dube) who pick and pull at the beat with syncopated drums and punchy keys, all while being propelled by Verb’s lyrics.

A Day Without Love – “Reminders”

Brian Walker’s A Day Without Love project has been in and around Philly for years, and he’s become a staple of the music scene in the city whether it’s playing shows, organizing & running DIY music pages to bring musicians together, or his great new podcast (Dreams Not Memes). During quarantine, he recorded and released a new record titled Comfort In The Bedroom, which mostly consists of warped beats and jangly guitars, but it’s most intimate and stunning moment is the tearjerker, “Reminders.”

Cook Thugless – “California”

Cook Thugless is a band based out of New Brunswick, New Jersey, who gained popularity on Rutgers campus by mixing genres such as pop, hip-hop, rock, and R&B. Their new album, YIKES, comes out later this month and it contains the single, “California,” for which the band just released a new music video. “California” pops back and forth between a synth-y, sunny breeze and a funk-inspired West Coast ride.

KooF – “Dance Or Shut Up”

Over the past couple weeks, Philly-based instrumentalist KooF has been releasing live EPs on Bandcamp collected from the livestreams he’s been performing throughout quarantine. Live/Raw 1 came out last week, and this past Friday he released Live/Raw 2, which opens with the lively jazz loop, “Dance Or Shut Up.” Built over a harmonized trumpet line, the track evolves over the course of its runtime, constantly challenging its own motifs.
