Good Old War’s Danny Black Releases Studio Album, Black Ryno

Danny Black of Good Old War, Joshua Radin and Anthony Green

By Brian Walker

Danny Black released his third full length album,“Black Ryno” in collaboration with Ryan Zimmaro (drummer of Vacationer). The record came out last Friday and is available in vinyl via Umbrella Man Records. Black’s new record contrasts very differently from his past two records which are instrumental and bright. Black Ryno is an energetic animal that navigates Danny Black’s guitar prowess and storytelling. Characterized by infectious riffs and heavy tones, each track moves smoothly leaving no room for boredom.

Black intended to record the album as “heavier” with more collaborations and wanted to reach out to different singers to “re-sing” his ideas. After reviewing his record during pre production he was satisfied with his record. Working with Ryan Zimmerman ( aka Ryno) took one day to record the drums for the entire album. While the record may be titled to describe the collaboration between Ryan (Ryno) and Danny (Black) the record is an extension of Danny Black’s talent.

While many listeners know Danny from his back catalogue as well as his work with Good Old War and Anthony Green, every track stands out on its own for different reasons whether it be the wurlitzer sounds , “Have Inspiration-Will Travel” or the heavy guitar fuzz and quick drumming in “Dirty Games” this record is a heavy hitter for 2020.

The Philadelphia Globe is glad to have reviewed this record. I hope to see this record sampled in pop, EDM and hip hop tracks or film. Whether you are a fan of My Morning Jacket, Queens of the Stone Age or are in the mood of Good Old War nostalgia, Black Ryno is a solid record to check out.
