Manayunk’s Family Band, the Tisburys

Dispatch from Around the Globe – Summer Quarantine Edition

The Tisburys are a Philadelphia-based indie rock band fronted by singer-songwriter Tyler Asay. Originally from Scranton, PA, the group has evolved from the duo of Asay and guitarist John Domenico, to being joined by bassist Doug Keller and drummer Andrew Huston. The band plays loud and experimental indie-rock with power-pop influences, a real Family Band™ with frequent appearances by the band’s musical peers.

What’s your favorite song that reminds you of summer?

Tyler: “Rosalita” by Bruce Springsteen.

We are always looking for new film and television to check out.  What’s your favorite thing you’ve watched over the past few months?

Tyler: I just watched Palm Springs on Hulu and loved it. I’ve been enjoying the shows I May Destroy You and Betty on HBO, and my quaran-binges are currently The Sopranos and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

John: As Good As It Gets

Doug: I revisited two of my favorite series, The Leftovers and Nathan For You

Andrew: Office Space… 28 Days Later

Your vacation plans probably got thwarted due to the global pandemic.  Where had you hoped to travel to this summer?  Where are you planning to do some fun, summer things this year instead?

Tyler: I’m supposed to go to Ireland with family for Thanksgiving this year, so we’ll see if that still happens.

John: Maine, Texas, Oregon & Florida. Camping out in upstate NY/CT, and of course, Park Slope.

Andrew: Cornhole in my backyard.

Can you recommend a local, Black owned business that we should check out?

Tyler: Before the shutdown, we ate at a really great vegan restaurant in Germantown called The Nile Cafe.

Andrew: The Spicy Belly in Manayunk.

What’s your favorite shore town?

Tyler: Ocean City, New Jersey.

John: Virginia Beach… Wait, does this mean Jersey?

Doug: Avalon.

Andrew: Rehobeth.

Lots of people have been releasing music over quarantine.  What’s your favorite release that came out since March?

Tyler: I love the new Phoebe Bridgers & Haim records a lot! The new My Morning Jacket album is pretty spectacular too.

John: Charli XCX… Jacob Collier’s “All I Need”

What’s your favorite summertime tradition?

Tyler: Going to a baseball game and buying an overpriced (but delicious) cheesesteak.

John: Campfires after a gig, passin’ the doob.

What’s your favorite summertime treat?

Tyler: An ice-cold Modelo while blasting some Bruce Hornsby or Huey Lewis.

John: Cold Brew & BBQ.

Doug: Rita’s Misto.

You’ve probably sharpened your cooking skills since quarantine began. What’s your favorite thing to make for a meal these days?

Tyler: We’ve been making lots of stir frys and pasta dishes; any way to use up what is already in the fridge or cabinets [laughs].

John: Broccoli, Banana and Milk Smoothie.

Doug: Apples with peanut butter.

Andrew: Steak kebabs.

Best summer concert you ever saw?  What’s your favorite venue to see a summer concert in?

Tyler: Two summers ago I saw Arcade Fire at Festival Pier, which was pretty epic. Favorite summer venue is probably just XPN Fest in general, I’m so bummed it’s not happening this year.

John: Dave Matthews at SPAC. Montage Mountain can be fun too.

Doug: Wilco at Niagara Falls was a great time. I’m pretty sure it’s closed now, but I saw some great shows at Festival Pier.

Andrew: Wilco @ The Mann Center.

Favorite Philly bands right now?

Tyer: Hootsie, The Lunar Year, Dweller, Highnoon, Secret American, & Archpalatine.

Doug: Full Bush, Bandit, Slomo Sapiens, Kerry Hallett, Local Smokes, Mat Burke and Church Girls.

John: Riverby & James Barrett!

Andrew: Ali Awan & Ona.

Favorite non-Philly bands right now?

John: Origami Angel

Tyler: Country Westerns from Nashville, and The Dead Tongues from Durham.

Doug: Fontaines D.C.

Favorite Summer Blockbuster(s)?  Did you see it in the theater?

Tyler: I mean, JAWS is the ultimate “summer blockbuster,” right? I remember the first Avengers movie being such a big deal to me and my friends at the time. I’m excited to see Tenet but I am in no rush.

Doug: Probably The Dark Knight when it came out.

John: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, saw it in Times Square.

Current summer reading? All time favorite summer read?

Tyler: I’m about to start Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, but when it comes to an “all time summer read,” Still Life With Woodpecker by Tom Robbins is the ultimate beach read, mostly because it takes place in Hawaii.

John: Current- The Plague by Albert Camus, All time fave- Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky (Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, of course!)

Doug: Currently I’ve been reading Starman by James Robinson and Invincible by Robert Kirkman.

What’s your favorite summer jawn?

John: Hikes and walks in the woods and neighborhoods

Tyler: Playing music with my friends, which we will hopefully be able to do soon! So wear your masks and stay safe.
