A few days ago, Philadelphia area singer-songwriter Tim Weaver released the first single “Cigarette” off his upcoming debut EP Stranger (releases January 15th 2021). The track is a hybrid of folk, rock,and pop and feels like the introduction of an artist characterized by heavy synths and spanning bass kicks. Weaver has been influenced by artists such as Manchester Orchestra, The Postal Service, and David Bazan. You can hear his influences in the vocal stacking production song as well as in the lyrics. The open space created between instruments provides an atmospheric vibe very similar to Bazan and Gibbard’s past work. When you hear “When it’s your first one in a while” around 1:27 you can hear the Gibbard influence with the solace of reverb over the vocals. As Weaver states “‘Cigarette’ describes the feeling one gets when they partake in something they haven’t done in a while.Most folks know what a whirlwind feeling nicotine or caffeine can be after not having it in one’s system for a while. Likewise, it’s about love and those who are desperate for it.” Tim Weaver’s song covers a relatable theme with the social activity of smoking cigarettes The Philadelphia Globe is glad to have covered this track and looks forward to the release of Stranger January 2021.
