Philadelphia’s Alex Stanilla Shows Us a New World In “Control”

By Brian Walker

Tied between 2008 Warped Tour nostalgia and modern day charm, local musician Alex Stanilla shows his interest in memes and storytelling in, “Control.” Stanilla’s single is about the youthful struggle between independence and dependence. Using the repetitive hook “Leave me Alone, I’m in control…but take me home” Stanilla describes the cognitive dissonance of leaving your home, but also wanting the same dependence of a support system.

Teaming up with West Philly songwriter Mikey Mayo and a collection of other Philadelphia creators ( Sami Rahman and Monica Wiles) Stanilla created a parody music video to compliment the seriousness of his new single. Alex studied film at Uarts in the mid 2010s and has  produced a number of videos for many artists such as Plead the Filth, Mikey Mayo, BLK CRX and A Day Without Love. In this music video the parody is an intersection between meme culture, film technique comedy and making a joke out of the film,The Princess Bride. Combining humor with the tensions that come with growing older Alex Stanilla  makes his song more accessible to the average listener.
