Philadelphia’s Barney Cortez Celebrates Individuality In “Black Sheep” Music Video

By Brian Walker

Philadelphia alt pop rock singer Barney Cortez returns to Philadelphia Globe with his new single and video, “Black Sheep.” Alongside the single, Cortez has released a video for “Black Sheep” which was shot and directed by another Philly native, photographer/videographer, Jen Strogatz (view video below).  The visual is a colorful landscape of Philadelphia and represents the artistic diversity that Cortez is trying to deliver in the story behind his new song.

“Black Sheep” is about  embracing your own identity and being different from your community. As Cortez states the song is about “ a relative who ran away after a nervous breakdown and cut off all her hair. We’ll always have a bond as being the black sheep of the family, and the song is a celebration rather than a lament of that.” The understanding of where you fit in your family, friend circle and social groups is an important part of finding emotional clarity. Listening to “Black Sheep” provides hope that it is okay to be different.

Characterized by 80s synths and 90s guitar style riffs, “Black Sheep” is reminiscent of artists such as Elliot Smith and The Cure. Parts of the song could easily be a theme song for the next Netflix sitcom on youthful angst and discovery. The Philadelphia Globe is honored to follow Barney Cortez’s journey as a musician and you should give the song and visual a listen.
