Philadelphia’s Alright Junior Gets Political On “Battle Scars”

Alright Junior Gets Political On Their Newest Release “Battle Scars”

By Brian Walker

Battle Scars by Alright Junior reminds us that fuzz is here to stay and it’s okay to feel vulnerable in 2020.

Battle Scars was recorded by Josh Pannepacker (Cheerleader) at Thanks Mom studio in New Jersey and mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer Alan Douches( Ratboys,Screaming Females,AJJ and more). Battle Scars is a three song EP that  is driving, anthemic and deep.

Given the struggles many of us have faced this year in 2020, this record can provide a listener a message of awareness and hope. The first track, “Choke the Earth” reminds us that we should not give up in times of negativity. This is clear in lead singer Jace Miller’s opening lines “forward thinking as we are, how did this get this far…?” Relating this song to current events, how did we get this far in times of unity and solidarity?

The second track wastes no time calling out the human struggles of late stage capitalism.  “Forever Now” refers to the corruption of corporate corruption of capitalism in our society. Following a melody fuzzy bass line with an octave run, Miller starts the song with “clone every boy and every girl, replace us for money.” The dehumanization of society as capital and profit is described here.

While discussing the struggles of fighting systematic oppression and corrupt oligarchies, this record reminds us that there is still a glimmer of hope in the last track, “Please Say.” Miller shouts “Please say we won’t be afraid. What does this mean? It means we need to fight together, we need to come together and show our vulnerabilities even during times of turmoil.

Despite the summer being a time of enjoyment, we must be reminded that the fight is not over, and Alright Junior is showing you that we must come together and we must not tolerate the inequities of our society.
