By Brian Walker

North Philadelphia based rapper, DaRealZah released a seven song EP Pay Homage 2. This is the third EP DaRealZah has released in 2020, following Trials and Tribulations and Pay Homage. Covering many elements of hip hop culture and his own life, DaRealZah is telling a story about the brutal reality of living in the streets of Philadelphia. In track 2, “When I’m Gone” DaRealZah says “In my hood there’s too many Zimmerman’s killing innocents.” Referring to the death of Trayvon Martin and the ongoing gun violence that happens in Philadelphia.

DaRealZah’s three releases feel like a part of a trilogy with Pay Homage 2 being a conclusion to his lived experiences. DaRealZah is only 21 years old and has experienced the loss of many loved ones and friends to gun violence including his father in 2018. Using his brand collective, RMG ( Respect my Grind), the story behind DaRealZah is about survival and desiring peace. In the concluding track , “Venting” DaRealZah says, “They say Black Lives Matter, I seen Black Lives Shatter,” referring to the cutthroat lifestyle of living in Philadelphia with the fear of being assaulted by police or being caught up in the crossfire of gun violence.
