Conshohocken’s “Least Favorite Country Band,” Hootsie

Dispatch from Around the Globe – Summer Quarantine Edition

Jeff Yerger from Hootsie, your least-favorite country band… back by unpopular demand: new album “Goodbye Monday” dropping August 2020! New singles, “Yellow Sky” and “High Tide” are available now on Bandcamp

What’s a favorite song of yours that reminds you of summertime? Oh man, right off the bat I’m going to lose any minuscule amount of street cred I might’ve had with this answer, but for whatever reason, “The End of the Innocence” by Don Henley will never cease to remind me of warm summer nights. That said, if you want to make me sound cooler (and let’s be honest, I can use all the help I can get), you could always pick something by Tame Impala (“The Slow Rush” is full of summer jams). “Thinking of a Place” by The War on Drugs is also a perfect drunk-on-a-summer-night song.

We are always on the lookout for new TV shows and films to check out.  What’s one of your favorite shows and/or movies that you’ve watched over the past few months? I haven’t seen a lot of movies lately, but my fiance and I have been obsessed with Peaky Blinders this summer. Great fucking show!

Your vacation plans probably got thwarted due to the global pandemic.  Where had you hoped to travel to this summer?  Where are you planning on doing some fun summer activities instead this year? We were supposed to be headed to the beach in North Carolina this year but couldn’t because of COVID, which was a bummer because I miss the beach and don’t get many opportunities to go, even for a day trip.

Can you recommend a local Black owned business that we should check out? Two Locals Brewing, the first black-owned brewing company in Philly. They’re just starting out but they recently collaborated with Love City Brewing to release “Black is Beautiful” imperial stout this week (with proceeds going to BLM), which I need to get my hands on.

What’s your favorite shore town? Stone Harbor, Manasquan, Cape May… you can’t go wrong really, unless you’re in Atlantic City.

Lots of people have been releasing music over quarantine.  What’s a favorite release of yours that has come out since March?Waxahatchee’s new album is great, and it’s one of the first that comes to mind when you talk about quarantine albums. There’s also the new Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, The Beths, Jeff Rosenstock, I’m Glad It’s You, Jason Isbell… I could go on. That said, to my ears, none of them come close to RTJ4. That thing is a monster and an instant classic.

What’s your favorite summertime tradition? Drinking outside

What’s your favorite summertime treat? Choco Tacos!

You’ve probably sharpened your cooking skills since quarantine began. What’s your favorite thing to make for a meal these days? Oh man, I love cooking, and there’s a lot I love to make (except homemade pizza which is frustrating as all hell). But recently I made this linguini with shrimp and scallops (because why not) in this sorta vodka sauce and it was the bomb if I do say so myself.

Best summer concert you’ve ever seen?  What’s your favorite venue to go to for a summertime show? I saw Japandroids and The Menzingers back-to-back two summers ago… I think I’m still sweating from those shows. Festival Pier in Philly is a great summer venue but I think it’s gone now? I saw The Replacements there the first summer I moved to Philly, so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart.

Favorite Philly bands right now? Aside from the bigger guys like Hop Along, The Menzingers, etc…

The Tisburys
Jamie and the Guarded Heart
Party Muscles
LUNCH
Riverby

There are so many, which is why I love this town. I know I’m missing a ton!

Favorite non-Philly bands right now? As of this very moment, I’m obsessed with Fontaines DC, who have a new record coming out soon. I’ve also been diving into John Prine’s discography a lot this summer.

Favorite Summer Blockbuster(s)?  Did you see this in the theater? The Dark Knight I think is the last true summer blockbuster I saw in theaters and one that I still love.

Current summer reading? All time favorite summer read? Just finished a book called “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins, which is one of the best novels I’ve read in a while and a great summer read. A few summers ago I read Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements by Bob Mehr, which I simply can’t recommend enough, not just as a summer read but a…uh…must-read-before-you-die read.

What’s your favorite summertime jawn? Hoagiefest…or Gritty…or Gritty eating a hoagie during Hoagiefest
