Dispatch from Around the Globe – Summer Quarantine Edition

New alt band out of Philly from songwriter, Noah Scheffey. You can listen to the debut single “Keep My Cool” below:

What’s a favorite song of yours that reminds you of summertime?

Noah: Your Body Is A Weapon by The Wombats always gets me in the summertime zone. I could really just say the entire Glitterbug album.

Logan: This might be cliche but the song ‘Summertime Gladness’ by Dance Gavin Dance has a perfect mix of a little heavier music but with tasteful grooves and an upbeat vibe throughout the entire song. I definitely have jammed out to this song on a long drive and belted out the chorus. Other drivers gave me some looks but you can’t be bothered while listening to this song.

We are always on the lookout for new TV shows and films to check out.  What’s one of your favorite shows and/or movies that you’ve watched over the past few months?

Noah: Well, I can absolutely speak for Logan and myself that ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ is the best show of all time. It’s the only show that I can re-watch whenever I want and somehow still, *after numerous binges* find that it never gets stale. It’s safe to say that besides music, that show is the biggest thing that the two of us have in common and there’s absolutely no shame in that! ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ is something I recently discovered through the help of a friend and wow, what an incredible mockumentary style comedy. Vampires with The Office style shot composition and humor is pure art. Then there’s the obvious ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘The Flash’. Because I’m absolutely ranting I’ll finish up with a movie that I can’t get out of my brain.. (I swear I don’t watch that much TV!) I recently watched ‘Under the Silver Lake’ with Andrew Garfield. Wow, what an incredibly twisted and fun film. You really have no idea what’s real at any point and there’s something so intriguing about that. No spoilers!

Logan: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is by far one of the shows I binge about 37 times a year. Also I’ve taken in a new love for the show Survivor and hope to get on that show to test my skills in surviving the elements.

Your vacation plans probably got thwarted due to the global pandemic.  Where had you hoped to travel to this summer?  Where are you planning on doing some fun summer activities instead this year?

Noah: Fortunately, nothing really changed for me this summer in terms of traveling. I didn’t really have any plans other than hunkering down and writing.

Logan: I’ve had many gigs lined up with bands that I’m also musically obligated to and they have been postponed/cancelled due to Covid. Many festivals as well. To combat the lack of live playing I’ve reconnected with some old friends and have been playing a lot of video games, best way to social distance, but a small group of us planned a camping trip for a few days to get out in nature and away from the world.

What’s your favorite shore town?

Noah: Wilmington, North Carolina stands out to me in recent memory.

Logan: My favorite shore town for sure in Rehoboth Delaware. My family always went to Rehoboth beach for vacations since we had family living there. Funny story, when I was around 3-4 I accidentally walked a half mile up the beach away from my family, while trying to find them. It was quite the day and gave my parents a good scare.

Lots of people have been releasing music over quarantine.  What’s a favorite release of yours that has come out since March?

Noah: Rina Sawayama’s album ‘Sawayama’ has been my favorite album of the year so far. That is some of the most incredibly complex yet palpable “pop” records I’ve heard in awhile. It was really refreshing. It also always helps the longevity of an album when the lyrics actually carry weight. 10/10.

Logan: The album ‘It Is What It Is’ by Thundercat has been one of my favorites to come out this year, April 3rd. This R&B/Soul album is so funky I had to drink a whole glass of water because I had so much thirst for this album. With tracks like ‘Funny Thing’, ‘Miguel’s Happy Dance’ and ‘Dragonball Durag’ its just instantly a classic. I guarantee you’ll be a fan after listening to any of those tracks.

What’s your favorite summertime tradition?

Noah: I wouldn’t call it a tradition, but I love late day summer running.

Logan: My summertime traditions have been ever changing but with playing music and establishing myself as a musician, many venues have become almost tradition to play at. The experiences at some venues always draw me back to playing there.

What’s your favorite summertime treat?

Noah: Nothing beats Capri Sun.

Logan: My favorite summertime treat is an icee pop with a twist. I add some tequila to the pop and freeze them for a refreshing adult treat.

You’ve probably sharpened your cooking skills since quarantine began. What’s your favorite thing to make for a meal these days?

Noah: My cooking level is that of a middle schooler, and that’s a disservice to all middle schoolers out there.

Logan: I am no wizard in the kitchen but my brother knows how to grill up some burgers over a handmade fire, by far better than any restaurant burger I’ve ever had.

Best summer concert you’ve ever seen?  What’s your favorite venue to go to for a summertime show?

Noah: I went to Firefly last June and that lineup was the best first time festival experience I could ask for. Seeing Panic! At The Disco, Sir Sly, Andrew McMahon, Half Alive, Awolnation, Young The Giant and so many others was a memory I’ll never forget. Rad!

Logan: My favorite summer concert I’ve been to was not a concert but a summer festival called Beardfest. It’s held in Hammonton New Jersey and is full of talent with acts coming in world wide. I had the pleasure of performing on their line up in 2019 and met with so many musicians from every walk of life. The experience there is very memorable to me and one that I will never forget. As for venues my favorite for summertime shows is The Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore Pa. It’s a pretty intimate room but still can pack people in. The sound and light team there make sure their shows sound and look good.

Favorite Philly bands right now?

Noah: I’d have to say Wes Phoenix, Broadcast, Andorra, Nearly York, tyler drama, Drew Nugent and Archpalentine are my current favorites. <3

Wes Phoenix
Broadcast
Andorra
tyler drama
Nearly York
Drew Nugent
Archpalatine

Logan: I have so many close relationships with many Philly artists, having the luxury of sharing stages and shows with most, I could go on and on but here are a few: Hepners Rebellion, Earth Radio, Hoochie Coochi, The Susquehanna Floods, Sage Turtle, Tweed, Trap Rabbit, Nalani and Sarina and Gnarbot.

Favorite non-Philly bands right now?

Noah: To name a few: Fall Out Boy, Jon Bellion, Andrew McMahon, Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco, Young The Giant, The Wombats, Sir Sly, Queen, Lorde, Muse, Green Day, AJR and Weezer.

“Brooklyn You’re Killing Me” – Andrew McMahon:

Logan: As for the bands not in Philly I have a wide range in artist genres spanning from Pop to Metal and everything in between. If I had to choose a few the most I’ve been listening to have been The Strokes, Weezer, Lianne La Havas, Elton John, Run The Jewels, Thundercat, Pluralone, John Frusciante, Vulfpeck and Dragonforce. I love all types of music that make me feel something when I’m listening to them and it spans across the vast world of music in general.

Favorite Summer Blockbuster(s)?  Did you see this in the theater?

Noah: I’m really looking forward to ‘TENET’, but it keeps getting pushed back.

Logan: I’ve not gotten to a theatre this summer due to obvious precautions but the movie Ford vs Ferrari was a great movie I watched on Hulu the other day. Some other indie films caught my eye like Lords of Chaos, it’s about the rise of pure Norwegian Black Metal and is not for the faint of heart. Very graphic movie but it’s a great story loosely based on real events in the late 80’s, early 90’s, in Norway.

Current summer reading? All time favorite summer read?

Noah: I just started the Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It really makes you value and appreciate the luxury we have in America today. Everyone should read this book to really gain some perspective because what we have is so easy to take it for granted. Well, that took a dark turn. Anyways.. UNICORNS AND RAINBOWS!

Logan: I am not currently reading anything at the moment but my favorite book of all time is the autobiography of Andre Agassi, Open. It opened the door into the mind of a professional tennis player falling from grace, aka world number 1, and his rise back to the top. He’s been my favorite tennis player ever since. I cried when I watched him play his last match on TV and give his farewell speech.

What’s your favorite summertime jawn?

Noah: Mocha iced coffee, because I’m basic af.

Logan: Favorite summertime jawn is just going with the flow and creating good times and memories with friends and people of the night.
